The Rise and Fall of MQA on TIDAL: A Cautionary Tale for Audiophiles

  • Lossless = lossless and anything pretending to be more than lossless is just bs at best. Music is created in a studio with a variety of gear and the consensus among modern producers is that 48khz/24bit is more than you’ll ever need for playback. Issues with aliasing are all taken care off as modern audio tools and converters use oversampling to avoid any issues (eg. Saturators, Limiters, and other non linear audio processing). The 24bit is used to avoid possible issues with file conversion on streaming platforms, it’s not needed for audio quality, for that 16bit is sufficient. 48khz instead of 44.1khz is used to ensure that absolutely everything one doesn’t want in the signal can be filtered out more smoothly (less of a brickwall filter is needed). Switching to 88.2/96/etc is useless in today’s world unless your DAC is from the 80s. Anyone who tells you differently should look into the matter more deeply, and not on audiophile websites that have the next shiny new thing for sale to solve issues that don’t exist, but into the audio engineering side of things.

  • In iOS you have to go to settings and toggle on offline mode in order to actually listen to your downloaded playlists and tracks, albums etc. from local files. Feels counter-intuitive because you’d think going to the downloaded section should automatically play from local, but Tidal won’t try to play from local files unless you are in offline mode.
  • Doing the same for me, the most random tracks sometimes delete off a playlist
  • I don't have this problem on Android. I go to toggle offline mode. Then switch to airplane mode. All works fine with downloaded music. Same thing if I try it with only offline mode. Then try to play downloaded music. No problem!

Any way to update "recommended songs"?

At the end of Playlist there's a section of recommended tracks that up to now has been pretty helpful. You just hit the "plus" and it adds it. The problem, is there should be a minus too. ...

  • No way to update recommended songs but to find more options I typically go to one of the track or artist radios
