  • Honestly it's a tricky problem but far from exclusive to Wikipedia. The main way to solve it is to find the origins of said claims and verify if they are accurate. I remember seeing this video about a Welsh Kingdom that never existed that was on Wikipedia. The reason it was added to Wikipedia was because said kingdom was added to the game Crusader King's 2. CK2 got it's information from a prolific fabricator of Welsh history. This game of pass the parcel happens all the time even in academic circles. The process of review always helps iron out this inaccuries but it's a slow process and making misinformation is quick.
  • > the underlying difficulty behind such citogenesis problems is that the Wikipedia community does not require citations for every bit of information added to the site. I sometimes get scared when I see English Wikipedia articles with whole paragraphs without sources. In Portuguese Wikipedia this is not allowed.
  • This is an issue of broken paper trails. Ultimately, everything should be traceable back to an evidentiary source. There are several we should use: - Science and academia, because of their in-built transparency and peer-review mechanisms. - The legal system, because of their adversarial mechanism which establishes findings and judgements - Journalism, in particular for contemporaneous records of events and facts Obviously, there are problems with each of these, but nonetheless, those paper trails need to be anchored to something.
